Getting started

What is Kiyume?

Kiyume is a manga reader for iPhone and iPad. It keeps the series you follow in one library, remembers where you stopped in every chapter and gets out of the way while you read: right to left for manga, left to right for comics, one long strip for webtoons.

Does Kiyume come with manga?

No — Kiyume is a reader, like a music player without a music store, and you choose where to read from:

  • sources published by other people, that you decide to trust — see how sources work;
  • comics you already have on your iPhone;
  • your own collection, on a computer or server at home.
Which devices does Kiyume run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later.

How do I join the beta?

Kiyume is in public beta, through TestFlight, Apple’s app for testing new apps. Install TestFlight from the App Store, then open the download link on your iPhone or iPad and tap Install. Updates arrive in TestFlight, and you can send feedback and screenshots from there.

Is there an Android version?

Not at the moment.

Do I need an account?

No sign-up needed: you open the app and start reading.

Which languages is the app in?

English, Italian, German, Spanish, French and Simplified Chinese. Kiyume follows the language of your iPhone; you can choose a different language for Kiyume alone in your iPhone’s Settings, under Kiyume.

Reading

How do I change the reading direction?

Open the reader’s ⋯ menu and choose a reading mode: right to left, left to right, vertical pages or webtoon. Kiyume remembers your choice for each series, so a manga and a webtoon in your library can each keep their own.

How do webtoons work?

Webtoon mode joins the pages into one continuous strip, so you can scroll through a whole chapter without a break.

Can I see two pages side by side?

Yes. On iPad, or with your phone turned sideways, Kiyume can show two pages side by side, like a printed volume.

How do I read offline?

Press and hold a chapter and choose Download. Downloads are queued one chapter at a time and wait in Downloads until they’re on your device.

Will downloads fill up my phone?

Downloaded chapters are never removed on their own, not even to free space. If you’d like Kiyume to tidy up, turn on automatic removal: a downloaded chapter is removed when you finish it and close the reader. Settings › Downloads and space shows how much room Kiyume uses. Covers and pages Kiyume keeps in its cache are small, temporary, and can be cleared at any time.

Can I read comics I already have?

Yes. Import them from the Files app, or copy them into Files › On My iPhone › Kiyume › Local. Kiyume reads comic archives and plain folders of images, and treats each folder as a series.

Can I connect my own server?

Yes. If you keep your collection on a Komga server at home, add it from Connect your own server. Kiyume talks only to that address, and your sign-in stays in the iPhone’s Keychain.

Can I organise my library?

Yes: sort and filter it, pin the series you care about most and create your own lists. Each series shows how many chapters you haven’t read and how many are downloaded.

A series stopped working. Can I read it elsewhere?

If you have more than one source, open the series and choose Read it from another source. Kiyume looks the title up and proposes what it finds; nothing is linked until you say so, and your library and history stay where they are.

New chapters

How do new-chapter notifications work?

Turn on Tell me about new chapters. Kiyume checks the series in your library in the background and sends a notification when one has a new chapter. iOS decides exactly when background checks run, so a notification can arrive a little after the chapter did.

What does the release calendar show?

The new chapters of the series in your library, on the day they came out. It shows only chapters that already exist in a source you have; it doesn’t guess future release dates.

Sync, backup and tracking

How does iCloud sync work?

Turn it on in Settings › iCloud and backup. Your library, lists, progress and history sync through the private database in your own iCloud account. Downloaded chapters aren’t included: they stay on each device.

Sync runs when you open the app, and at any time with Sync now. If you sign in with a different iCloud account, Kiyume asks before merging anything.

How do I back up my library?

Create a backup file in Settings › iCloud and backup and save it wherever you like. It contains your library, lists, your place in each series, your history and your tracking links. Restoring adds to what’s already there, so nothing you’ve read is lost. Sources are named in the file but never included.

How do I connect AniList or MyAnimeList?

Open a series and choose Tracking. You sign in on AniList’s or MyAnimeList’s own page, then link the series. From then on, finishing a chapter updates your list: progress only moves forward, the first chapter marks the series as reading and the last one as completed.

Privacy and safety

Does Kiyume collect my data?

Kiyume doesn’t collect personal data. What you read stays on your device, or in your own iCloud if you turn on sync. The privacy policy explains every connection Kiyume makes.

What is incognito mode?

While incognito is on, reading leaves no history and no position, and nothing is sent to AniList or MyAnimeList.

Can I lock Kiyume?

Yes. Kiyume can lock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode after it has been in the background for a while, and it covers what’s on screen when you switch apps. You need a passcode set on your iPhone to use the lock.

How is explicit content handled?

Explicit content is hidden until you choose otherwise. With Show explicit content off, adult sources are hidden in repositories and explicit series are hidden while browsing. Sources declare their own content ratings; if one gets it wrong, let me know.

Sources

What is a source?

A small, signed add-on that lets Kiyume read a catalogue published somewhere else. It contains no manga itself. Sources are written and published by other people, and installed only when you choose to trust them. Read the full guide.

Where do I find sources?

Kiyume doesn’t list, recommend or operate any source. Sources are shared by their authors through a repository link or file; when you open one, Kiyume shows who publishes it before anything is added.

A source doesn’t work. What can I do?

Open the source and run its health check: Kiyume tries a search, a series, its chapters and a page, and tells you which step fails. Sources are maintained by their authors — the repository shows where to report a problem. You can also use Report a problem, which attaches the check’s results.

Why does a series link to another app?

Some sources mark a series as licensed and link to its official release instead of hosting the chapters. Those links open in the publisher’s own reader, outside Kiyume. It’s the best way to support the people who make what you read.

Troubleshooting

Pages or covers don’t load.

Check your connection, then try again from the series screen. If it keeps happening with one source, the site behind it may have changed; run the source’s health check. Clearing the image cache in Settings › Downloads and space costs nothing but a reload, and never touches downloaded chapters.

My question isn’t here.

Write to me at support@kiyume.app or from Settings › Support › Get in touch in the app, which adds your app and iOS version to the message for you.
